Charlotte’s Web

This beautiful show was a remounted production from several years earlier, with a largely identical cast, but with a new flying effects designer and production staff. Rachael Silverman freshened up and beautified the scenery.

My responsibilities on this show, aside from the normal coordinating of scenery, lights, and sound, included selecting and working with a flying effects company, far in advance. Along with Jessica Ayers, I had the privilege of participating in the dance of operating the flying lines, guiding Jamie Farmer through the air in her 50+ performances as Charlotte. I was also responsible for securing her harness and running rigging safety protocols prior to every performance. As the late Scot Copeland told me in my job interview more than a year beforehand, my most important job as technical director was…“Don’t drop Jamie!”

This play was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to participate in. It never failed to elicit a gasp of awe in our audiences of 500+ children when Charlotte made her initial descent from the loft, down onto her hay bale perch, and gracefully spun words in her web.
